Songfacts®:

  • Opetaia Foa'i, Mark Mancina, and Lin-Manuel Miranda penned this song for the Disney animated movie Moana. It is sung by Dwayne Johnson, who voices a haughty demigod named Maui.
  • Billboard magazine asked Miranda about the writing of the song. He replied:

"We did a lot of research into the different beliefs about Maui in Polynesia - sometimes he's responsible for pulling the sun down, sometimes he's responsible for the invention of coconuts. So I loved the idea of this demigod being like, 'I know it's overwhelming to meet me. You're welcome for everything.' Only Dwayne could pull that off.

In my head the song was a mix of Beauty and the Beast's 'Gaston' and Aladdin's 'Friend Like Me.'"
  • It was suggested during an interview with the BBC that getting Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to sing a few bars must have posed a considerable challenge for Lin-Manuel Miranda. But it turned out he couldn't wait to get started.

"Everyone has been asking, 'How do you get The Rock to sing?'" laughed Miranda. "As soon as The Rock signed up, he was like, 'Where is my song?' He knew that was one of his favorite parts of the Disney animated musical tradition."
