Songfacts®:

  • In this mellow song, the singer is trying to make sense of a failed relationship. When he's ready to throw up his hands and call it quits, a voice in his head implores: "do something."

Don Henley told Billboard magazine in a Q&A on October 12 2007: "'Do Something' is an interesting song because it starts out like a love song, a boy/girl song, but then it takes on larger implications. And that line ("How did we get on this road we are traveling?") could pertain to a relationship between a man and a woman or it could be a statement about the country as a whole."
  • Timothy B. Schmit sings lead on most of this song, but Don Henley sings the bridge. Henley and Schmit wrote the song along with with band's touring guitarist, Steuart Smith.
  • "Do Something" is part of the last Eagles album, Long Road Out Of Eden. It's a double album, as usual dominated creatively by Don Henley and Glenn Frey. Timothy B. Schmit and Joe Walsh were also quite capable songwriters and vocalists who added a nice balance to the group. Schmit's other lead vocal is on the track "I Don't Want to Hear Any More."
