Songfacts®:

  • Ed Sheeran wrote much of his sixth studio album, 2023's Subtract, in a studio on the coast in southeast England. Throughout that album he weaves seafaring metaphors inspired by his seaside location.

As Sheeran was crafting Subtract something else began to take shape. Just three months after its arrival, he unveiled Autumn Variations. This track clearly took inspiration from the same maritime surroundings, as he sings of the tranquillity and beauty of the English coastline.

I find this country of mine gets a bad reputation
    Of bein' cold and grey
But on the coast of the south to the east followed round
I find serenity I've never felt
There's a peace and a quiet in this island of ours
That can't be mirrored by anywhere else
  • The inspiration for the shape of Autumn Variations came from English composer Edward Elgar's "Enigma Variations." Elgar is considered the English national composer; his music evokes a sense of English pride and nostalgia. His works include the British patriotic anthem "Land Of Hope And Glory," which is often played at national events.
  • This song, alongside Sheeran's other compositions for Subtract and Autumn Variations, were produced by Aaron Dessner, the same producer who collaborated with Taylor Swift on Folklore and Evermore.
