Edgar Winter

Edgar Winter Artistfacts

  • December 28, 1946
  • Edgar was born with albinism, a genetic condition characterized by lack of pigmentation in the skin and hair, and a severe sensitivity to light. While Edgar has extremely poor eyesight due to the condition, he's surprisingly good at pool, even though he has trouble seeing the green balls because they blend in with the felt.
  • He's the younger brother of acclaimed blues-rock guitarist Johnny Winter, who also was born with albinism.

Edgar and Johnny began playing music together as children, when they both took up the ukulele. Edgar became a talented multi-instrumentalist, and by the late 1960s, he started playing keyboards and sax in Johnny's band. He took part in Johnny's performance at the historic Woodstock festival in 1969.
  • With his band White Trash, he played the closing night at the Fillmore East on June 27, 1971, along with The Beach Boys, The Allman Brothers Band, The J. Geils Band, and Mountain.
  • A song written by Edgar called "Way Down South," which was recorded by The Fabulous Thunderbirds, plays during the opening scene of the popular 1992 film My Cousin Vinny. Winter's own version of the tune appears on his 1994 solo album Not A Kid Anymore.
  • Edgar played sax on Tina Turner's 1989 hit "The Best."
  • He was a member of Ringo Starr's All Starr Band from 2006 to 2011 and again from 2022 to 2023.
  • In 2023, Edgar won a Grammy in the Best Contemporary Blues Album category for Brother Johnny, a star-studded tribute to his late brother. The album featured contributions from an impressive list of guest musicians, including Ringo Starr, Joe Walsh, and ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons. It's Edgar's only Grammy win.

  • Mo from Mesa ArizonaAnd no songs from “Shock Treatment”, sad...
  • Patrick from Washington Dc, United StatesI agree Jonny Winter is a very good guitarist, but his solo work just isn't as musically innovative as White Trash and Frankenstein and other Edgar things. Frankenstein, now that is a good song!
  • Don from Pittsburgh, PaI just do not understand. The site has Edgar, but not one of the greatest guitar players of all time. Edgar's brother Johnny. I"m baffled????
