Costello penned this tune with National Ransom producer T Bone Burnett, and American singer-songwriter Leon Russell. The latter also supplies the gospel boogie piano.
The song came about when Burnett and Russell were recording The Union album, together with Elton John. Costello went down to the studio to visit and T Bone introduced him to the American singer-songwriter. As Elton had to leave early that evening, T-Bone suggested the threesome write a song.
