Songfacts®:

  • When European label Bella Union released "Mykonos" as a single, they did so both as a 7-inch vinyl record as well as a digital download. The B-side on the UK version is "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song (live)," while the US B-side is "False Knight on the Road."
  • With an interesting mix of baroque pop, classic rock, and British folk, Fleet Foxes is a band showing influence from such '60s performers as Bob Dylan, Neil Young, the Zombies, and the Beach Boys. Sun Giant, the album on which "Mykonos" appears, was named the #1 album of the year by Pitchfork Media, Chicago. It was originally intended to be a tour release only, but became an official release after fan demand.
  • This song is particularly noteworthy for the video - an enchanting stop-motion animation done with origami and papercut models. It has a unique style, being kind of macabre but in a playful way, maybe similar to Edward Gorey's work. >>>

  • For a long time, "Mykonos" was a soul song. "It still has that '60s backbeat to it," Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold told Uncut magazine. "But it was big piano chords moving around without the harmonies and the acoustic stuff. It lacked the extra layers of interesting context. But once the first album was done, I thought, 'Right, maybe 'Mykonos' can sound more like that.' So, we recorded it on the Sun Giant EP."
