Songfacts®:

  • If you've ever wondered what you might do if you found yourself sitting across from Jesus Christ on, say, a train, Gabby Barrett has a song that'll make you ponder just that scenario, and a fair bit more. "Jesus on a Train" - co-written with Barrett's producer Ross Copperman and songwriters Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne - is a thoughtful tune that finds Barrett imagining a series of thought-provoking scenarios. She asks, quite directly:

If I saw Jesus on a train
Would I even ask His name?
Or just use it all in vain, maybe offer Him some change?
Or just let Him get off all alone and walk home in the rain

It's the kind of question that stops you in your tracks. Through lyrics as simple as they are profound, Barrett nudges us to think hard about how we might respond to seeing Jesus in everyday, humdrum situations. It's a call for deeper reflection on faith, action, and just what we might overlook in our day-to-day rush.
  • Barrett, a country star with strong Christian roots, makes no secret that her faith is central to her music. "I'm a very faith-based person," she told Apple Music, "and the Lord is very central in my music and what I do."
  • "Jesus on a Train" recorded for her sophomore album, Chapter and Verse, showcases the spiritual side of Barrett. The album is a highly personal project, blending her life as a singer, songwriter, wife, mother, and Christian. The title, a nod to the books of the Bible, is capped off with "The Verse: Doxology (Amen)," where Barrett is joined by worship artist Phil Wickham for an a cappella version of one of her favorite hymns.
  • "Jesus on a Train" marks Barrett's first release to Christian radio, arriving on October 14, 2024, and landing her solidly in the Christian music space, a move she's been building toward with purpose. Barrett referenced fellow artist Anne Wilson as a good example of balancing between country and Christian genres, and for her, it's a matter of identity.

"I fell in love with country music," she told the Christian Beat, "but being a Christian is my identity. My identity is in Jesus. And so that changes everything."
