Songfacts®:

  • A collaboration between Galantis, David Guetta and Little Mix, contrary to its title, this song is a declaration of resilience. Instead of dwelling on their heartbreak following a breakup, the Little Mix girls are taking a c'est la vie attitude. They aren't throwing any tantrums or holding any grudges because they understand that sometimes romances work out, sometimes they don't.
  • "Heartbreak Anthem" started with a chord progression Galantis came up with at a London studio just before the COVID lockdown. Once Guetta and Little Mix came on board, it became a remote work in progress for months with the artists making their contributions in London, Los Angeles, Stockholm and Paris studios. The full studio version of the dance-pop song was leaked on February 19, 2021, and officially released on May 20, 2021.
  • This was the first non-mixed song released by Little Mix as a trio, following the departure of Jesy Nelson in December 2020. Because the girls originally started working on the track before Nelson announced her parting, some minor changes needed to be made to the arrangement and Jesy's vocals were removed. Christian Karlsson - one half of Galantis - told The Metro newspaper:

"Little Mix came in pretty early on but they're so hardworking with their vocals, it was cool to see how they're perfectionists. I like that, I'm one myself. It was fun to watch them – every detail with the ad libs was very important to them.

Not lyrics but a little bit of arrangement and changing vocals and stuff. They're so professional. They all sang it all, the whole thing. Every single part of the song was sung by all of them. Then they were deciding on [who was doing what part]."
  • Samuel Douek directed the video, filming it in London East End's historic Wilton's Music Hall. Douek previously teamed up with Little Mix for their "Confetti" clip.
