Songfacts®:

  • Written by Swedish serial hitmaker Max Martin, this was the first original song to be sung by the Glee Cast. Having previously covered many of Martin's co-written tunes on the series such as "My Life Would Suck Without You" and "…Baby One More Time," Glee music supervisor Adam Anders felt it was appropriate to have his involvement.
  • The track premiered on February 25, 2011 on Ryan Seacrest's morning show, arrived at pop and adult pop radio a week later on March 1st and iTunes on March 8th. It was featured in the series' Original Song March 15th episode.
  • The song was co-written by Texan songwriter Savan Kotecha, whose resume includes songs recorded by Britney Spears, Usher and Leona Lewis. He told Digital Spy how he ended up working on this tune: "I was asked to do it by Adam Anders, who's the musical director of Glee and he came and approached Max Martin first and then Max called me. It was fun because I'm the only one out of me, Max and Shellman who watched Glee. I was a Gleek in high school, I was in the choir - so I love that show. What was great about the response was that it became an anti-bullying song."

He added: "When we were making the song we didn't necessarily aim for that, we just wanted it to represent what the show was about - individuality - that the nerds in high school always end up running the world. It's one of those keep-your-head-up kind of songs, but in a quirky way."
