Songfacts®:

  • This was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe's short story The Telltale Heart about a murderer plagued by the thumping heart of his victim. It reflected more mature songwriting for the band. >>

  • The song is about a guy who kills the boyfriend of a girl he's in love with so he can have her for himself.

"I wrote about something and I took it, twisted it and incorporated like a fantasy," Joel told Sorted magazine. "But it was all out of my head, kind of like a jealous moment. Then I kinda took it, twisted it and made it a little darker. Then they added music to it. It's totally Edgar Allan Poe."
  • The title is a play on the love song "My Funny Valentine," a standard that had been recorded by hundreds of singers.

  • Mykkie from Johnstown, PaThis song is about a guy who loves a girl, but, this girl has a boyfriend. The guy wants to get rid of the boyfriend, so he kills him one night after the boyfriend and girl have a date. You may wonder why the girl does not hate the guy for killing her boyfriend? She doesn't know he did it. She thinks her boyfriend was suicidal or was murdered. That way the guy can comfort her and possible win her over. It's a love story, strictly influenced by Edgar Allen Poe's "Tell Tale Heart."
  • Lila from Wilmington, Ohi agree with Samantha, lakeforest, Fl.
  • Jacob from Chicago, Ilit a great song but in it they send a messaage thats tels people if you love someone do anything to keep them close thats what i thnk
  • Stephanie from Montreal, Qci am in love with both of you guys Joel and Benji, i wouldnt mind having fun with you twins :)hehee!
  • M from Lima, PeruBest GC song ever!...I think this is clearly based on Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart. This are the reason why I believe it:
1°the line says "No tell-tale heart was left to find ", pretty obvius uh? xD
    2°the song is a first-person narrative(just like Poe's poem)
3°starts in medias res, in the middle of an event, the narrator is confessing a crime, this sparks the narrator's need to explain himself in great detail
4°The story is driven not by the narrator's insistence upon his innocence but by insistence on his sanity. This, however, is self-destructive because in attempting to prove his sanity he fully admits he is guilty of murder.
These and other reasons are exactly the same with Poe's poem. And...it seems that there was a tell tale heart after all XD...
  • Brittany from Townsville, AustraliaI dunno what the point is but it could be like the video clip for Saturday by Fall out boy, maybe the guy that kills the boyfriend is the real him just like Pete and Patrick both being the killer of all those people in the video clip for Saturday. I dunno is it that story or is it a different story, One way or another, someone help me out!!!
  • Tessa from West Valley, UtThis song is wierd
but cute in a twisted sense......
  • Into_the_darkness from Damascuse, CaI LOVE THIS SONG!!
    =]
  • Nikki from Wooster, OhBloody Valentine is a song that shows just how someone can love someone else. It's not this shallow love that most teens I hang out with say is the real thing. When someone would kill for you or die for you, you know that they truely love you.
  • Izzy from Buffalo, Nyi don't get this song. its like 'ok, im gonna kill the guy you love, so then you'll automatically love me and we can run away together.' i don't get that! i mean, if he killed the guy that she loves, then wouldn't that make her hate the guy? it makes no sense.
  • Samantha from Corby, Englandlove this song. one of my favourite gc songs.
  • Mandi from Indpls, United Statesthis is a good song even though its sad people can relate to it and all the things that they are sayin
  • Erik from Willow Hill, Pai love the whole murder story in the lyrics. it makes a good song even better.
  • Stephanie from Ellsworth, MeI can see where all of you are coming from. The song is freaky, which is why it is my favorite. It is loosely based on "The Tell-Tale Heart" and you can find it if you listen real carefully. The line "No Tell-Tale Heart was left to find..." is right in the lyrics. You are all cool. O, and have any of you ever heard of a GC freak called Karley Perkins?
  • Tera from Salem, Inevery valintines day i listen to this song while i eat my chocolate and watch the bubbles in my lava lamp go up and down! as you can tell i dont have a person to share my days with!
  • Jillian from Portland, TxI love Bloody Valentine. That song freaks the crap out of me because I can relate to the girl.
  • Ariana from Lima, Peruyeah rite..MATURE?! i sure love it, but it has nth 2 do with poe's story..just the killing of a guy..
  • Jonathan from Houston , TxI think this is one of GC coolest songs they recorded, its like they wrote a beutiful love story , gosh i love this song
  • Clare from Liverpool, Englandi think billy is hot. i used to think benji and joel were, but i think joel is too aware of it, and the other guys dont really care, which is good.
  • Clare from Liverpool, Englandi think this is their best song. It kinda has a darker side to it, and the tune fits the lyrics PERFECTLY.
  • Renee from Sydney, AustraliaI love this song cause it is a different love song. all the other love songs by other artists are all about stupid cat fights but this one shows that one man is ready to kill someone to get to the girl he loves.
  • Kathy from Melbourne, Australiawow that's so smart!! Great song. Yound and Hopeless is much better than the first album, on Chronicles they stopped being rock/punk, they got all alternative with violins and pianos... weird but not bad. I don't like The Truth.
  • Charlotte from Chicago, Ilgood thoughts, every1! this is my fave song!
  • Jim from Oxnard, CaMature songwriting? About killing a guy to get a girl? Poe must be rolling over in his grave, since this is hardly inspired by "The Tell-Tale Heart." Poe's short story was about a guy who killed an old man because of the way his eye looked. No love story involved.
  • Kelli from New Milford, Ctgood song its happy and sad in parts good good
  • Mistik from Sydney, Australiathis albums ok, i've got it and i have chronicles of life and death, i interpret it as a guy whining about not getting a girl, and him killing her because he can't get her, sorry if i'm narrow minded. this song's ok, i just like the tile of it cos it sounds greusome, but turns out to be a lot less gut wrenching then i thought, its a love song..
  • Rach from Norfolk, EnglandThis song is amazing. When I saw them live Benji said that this song was one he wrote about this guy who was dating the girl he really liked. Bless him! And he said that it is wrong to kill anyone so don't do it kids!
  • Amanda Couch from Manhattan, Kseveryone thinks this song is kind of phycotic but you have to really listen to it to understand it, It took me awile to catch the whole point of it but I got it eventually.
  • Milly from A Place, Canadawow samantha, i never thought of it like that, wow thats all i can say, wow!
  • Milly from A Place, CanadaI think this song is totaly kool! At first i thoght it was a little odd,but soon i found the"romantic" side of it and soon fell in love with the song!
  • Sara from Shickshinny, Pai love the song wodering. it is about joel and benjis dog cash. my favorite people in the band are the twins.
  • Kristen from Campbellville, CanadaYa I went to edgefest and Benji being the funny storytelling guy he is told us that it is indeed about a guy killing a girl he likes boyfriend. You should go see them in concert if you want to know song meanings because Benji tells you what it means before they play it. I think it irritates the band because he tells really long stories, and Joel said "on the count of three say Benji shut up, Benji shut up."
  • Rhett from Douglas, GaI think it is an awsome song, anyway u look at it. It could have a couple of meanings, but as long as it leaves u wondering it must be pretty good, it captured ur attention.-Rhett Bailey
  • Andrew from Brooklyn, Nyi dont see how ths song was inspired by the tell-tale heart, cause that poem was about some guy who killed an old man because he didnt like the way his eye looked.
  • Jayne from Milford, Ctall i can see when i hear this song is some guy waiting in the rain by this chicks window with a bloody knife...priceless
  • Amanda from Roanoke, VaI think that exactly what its about.
  • Alatriel from Lothlorien, Otherhe he i like this song
  • Rachel from Waurika, OkThis to me is a funny song. Did you know that Wondering was written about Cash(Joel and Benjis dog.)
  • Rabi from Zionsville, InI have never thought of that before Samantha, but your theory makeds sense. I can understand how that idea fits the lyrics.
  • Samantha from Lakeland, Fli think the boyfriend he kills is him and he loves her so much he is taking off his diguise for her to show her the real him and stop pretending to be some thing he isnt
