• Gorillaz frontman Damon Albarn drew inspiration from a visit to Turkmenistan with his daughter, where he witnessed the country's authoritarian regime firsthand.   "Turkmenbashi wanted everyone in Turkmenistan to only think happy thoughts and sleep unaffected by the sort of the doom of the world and just keep everything upbeat," Albarn explained to BBC Radio 1's Jack Saunders. "So he kind of banned all bad news, no more bad news. And that really struck me when I was there, I was very inspired by that. Sort of half terrifying and half well, actually. It'd be really nice, if there was I lived in a world where there was no more bad news."
  
  This notion - happiness imposed at gunpoint - became the seed of the song.
• The vocal duel underscores the theme: Albarn's 2-D takes on the role of the gleefully commanding strongman, all booming theatrics and messianic charm, while Russell Mael delivers the part of the dazed, half-willing subject, hypnotized into chanting "Oh, what a happy land we live in" until it sounds true. It's not far from Sparks' own knack for turning sinister absurdities into catchy choruses, or Gorillaz' long-standing trick of marrying bleakness with bounce.

  "Pharmakon" is a Greek term that means both "remedy" and "poison." It encapsulates the dictator's bargain: relief from anxiety in exchange for surrendering your grip on reality. No more bad news, but also, no more truth.
• "The Happy Dictator" is track three on The Mountain, Gorillaz' globe-trotting concept album recorded in English, Hindi, Arabic, Spanish, and Yoruba. The record is a conceptual exploration of death and the afterlife through the band's fictional characters, influenced by Albarn and Jamie Hewlett's personal experiences with loss and their travels to India.
