Songfacts®:

  • In Dolly Parton's classic "Jolene," she begs Jolene not to take her man. Gretchen Wilson takes a different approach in "Homewrecker," threatening to kick a woman's her pretty little butt if she even thinks about messing with her man.

Wilson made it clear she isn't a lady to be messed with, building an image as one tough cookie with her debut single, "Redneck Woman." Wilson put in the work to make it in music, holding down jobs in bars until she finally got her break.
  • "Homewrecker" is the fourth single from Wilson's first album, Here For The Party, following "Redneck Woman," the title track and "When I Think About Cheatin'." The album earned Wilson a Best New Artist Grammy nomination (she lost to Maroon 5) and a win for Female Vocalist of the Year at the CMAs.
  • Wilson wrote the song with the Nashville writers Rivers Rutherford and George Teren. Rutherford's credits include "I Need to Hear a Country Song" by Toby Keith and "Southern Style" by Darius Rucker; Teren also co-wrote "Million Dollar View" by Trace Adkins and "When I Get Where I'm Going" by Brad Paisley.
  • In 2024 Wilson released a song called "Little Miss Runner Up" that she considers a sequel to "Homewrecker," about what she calls "the girl we love to roll our eyes at." She wrote that one with the same guys: Rivers Rutherford and George Teren.
