Songfacts®:

  • Incubus lead singer Brandon Boyd explained: "In the song, Lorena refers to Lorena Bobbitt. The song is about being burned out and tired of everything, but knowing that you'll 'live again!'"

In 1993, Bobbitt cut off part of her husband's penis while he was sleeping - it was a major news story. >>>

  • One of the earliest Incubus songs, "Shaft" is part of their debut album, Fungus Amongus, released independently in 1995. They played it at most of their early live shows. The band signed with Epic Records in 1997 and made headway with their next album, S.C.I.E.N.C.E., released later that year.

  • Zero from Nowhere, Nj"Shaft" refers to the penis and in this song the person is having trouble "getting it up" (possibly because of taking some drugs) and figures he might as well cut it off 'cuz it's not working right...at least that's the popular belief of what this song is about (I can't really come to a better conclusion...).
  • Nate from Aurora, Ilwow..i didn't know about the bobbit part..ew..still cool
