Songfacts®:

  • "Bittersweet Goodbye" is a hands-in-the-air anthem about the end of a relationship. The producer Luude had the original idea for reworking "Bitter Sweet Symphony" in 2022. Having already worked with Issey Cross on his Moby sampling single "Oh My," he hooked up with the British singer-songwriter for this remix-mashup. The duo flipped a sample plucked from The Verve's iconic tune, injecting it with a rush of dynamic energy for the clubs.
  • Issey Cross debuted "Bittersweet Goodbye" at her Homebass rave event in Shoreditch on June 9, 2023. It went viral on TikTok after she uploaded a snippet of her performing the track, which led to over a million views on the platform.
  • Cross released "Bittersweet Goodbye" as her debut major label single after signing to Atlantic on June 30, 2023.
  • By sampling The Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony," Issey Cross' song is a fascinating example of how music evolves.

"Bittersweet Goodbye" samples the instantly recognizable melody from "Bitter Sweet Symphony" (1997), but with a faster tempo, adding a whole new energy to the familiar tune.

But the story goes deeper. The Verve themselves borrowed the melody from a sped-up sample of the Andrew Oldham Orchestra's cover of The Rolling Stones' "The Last Time" (1965). This orchestral version took the classic rock ballad and gave it a more dramatic flair.

The roots go back even further. The Rolling Stones' melody for "The Last Time" was heavily influenced by (or some might say it directly quotes) the traditional gospel song "This May Be the Last Time," popularized by The Staple Singers in 1954.
