Songfacts®:

  • In "Wet Dreamz," J. Cole tells the story about he lost his virginity to a girl in his math class and lied to her about not being a virgin. The track goes back a long way – it was originally intended for the North Carolina rapper's 2011 debut album, Cole World: The Sideline Story. He didn't release it until 2014, when it showed up on his third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive.
  • The song samples Family Circle's 1976 track "Mariya." Game's 2005 cut "Like Father, Like Son" also borrows from the classic soul tune.
  • The video follows two puppies falling for each other, as we watch the male pup plot to take their canine flirting to the next level. The clip ends with J. Cole and the other dog's owner having some fun of their own.

The puppy love video was directed by Ryan Staake, who has also helmed clips for Route 94 ("My Love") and Alt-J ("Left Hand Free.")
  • The vast majority of rap songs that detail sexual encounters are rather audacious and loaded with boasts. "Wet Dreamz" stands out because J. Cole explains how nervous he was leading up to that first intimate encounter. At the end of the song, it sounds like he pulls it off, but he still doesn't brag about it. This kind of real talk in his songwriting helped Cole stand out from the crowd. He didn't always get the same attention as more boisterous rappers, but in most cases he outsold them. Cole's albums consistently went to #1, and 2014 Forest Hills Drive was the best-selling rap album of 2014.
