Songfacts®:

  • Jade Thirlwall trades the pop world for the deep blue sea on "Into the Deep (Seas Cry)," a song written for the BBC nature series Blue Planet III. The former Little Mix singer teamed up with film composer Hans Zimmer and his Bleeding Fingers Music team for a track created specifically for the series' launch. It accompanied the extended trailer, giving the ocean a musical introduction grand enough to make even a sardine feel important.
  • The song premiered on Greg James' BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show on October 6, 2026, the day the series received its global first look. Jade wrote it alongside Zimmer, Thom Lukas of Bleeding Fingers Music, Starsmith, and Pablo Bowman. Zimmer and Russell Emanuel produced the track, which features Lukas on guitar, Katja Zupan on flute, Roman Soto on cello and violin, and Charlie Paxson on percussion.
  • The project began with a meeting at Sony Publishing, where Jade was looking to sign a publishing deal. When asked what might persuade her to commit, she mentioned her love of David Attenborough and anything associated with him. She had never written for a film, television show, or musical score, but regarded it as a dream opportunity. Sony contacted the BBC, and according to Jade, the response was the quickest yes the publisher had ever received for a music collaboration.
  • Jade chose collaborators she knew would be "just as ecstatic" about the project. She brought in Pablo Bowman, who helped her write "Angel Of My Dreams" and "Fantasy," along with Starsmith, who created the S.A.D. version of "Angel Of My Dreams." Bowman had sent Jade a demo the previous year called "David Attenborough," proving the naturalist had been on his radar for quite some time.
  • Zimmer's team supplied an orchestral arrangement, and Jade wrote the song to fit it, a complete reversal of her usual writing process. The writers collaborated remotely, with clips from Blue Planet III playing in the background for inspiration, a far more spectacular backdrop than a laptop screen and a cold cup of tea.

"I wanted to make sure that the song did sound incredibly celebratory and portray just how vast and phenomenal the sea is, whilst also bringing in a bit of reality of what's going on with climate change or with the ways in which the seas are suffering," Jade told Rolling Stone UK.

Lukas added the team aimed to capture "the brilliant light, deep shadows and intense emotional gravity of life beneath the waves."
