Songfacts®:

  • "Easy Distraction" is a song about coming to grips with the importance of someone in your life - a little too late, perhaps - and feeling the almost irresistible urge to let them know just how much they mean to you.

As James Bay puts it, "It's about realizing too late that someone means so much to you, but you still want to show them and let them know. It's exploring how, in the face of adversity, we can still reach out, we can still connect."
  • Bay has been in a committed relationship with Lucy Smith since they were teenagers. He penned "Easy Distraction" in such a way that its sentiments are broad and relatable, rather than being shackled to any specific romance - even if it does have a personal ring to it.
  • James Bay co-wrote "Easy Distraction" with The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers. Bay learned of Flowers' interest in collaborating with newer artists through a mutual friend, leading to their songwriting session in Park City, Utah.

As for how the collaboration went, there was a moment that left Bay feeling rather starstruck. "I brought a melody to our session, and he said, 'It's like a straight-up Beatles melody right there,'" he recalled to NME. "I was like, 'OK, so Brandon Flowers is comparing a melody I wrote to The Beatles' - it was surreal! A very cool moment."
  • "Easy Distraction" saw the light of day as a single on August 30, 2024, though it had been simmering on the creative back burner since 2020. Co-produced by Bay and Gabe Simon, the track incorporates an upbeat guitar riff, a shuffling drum groove, and Bay's gritty-yet-soulful vocal delivery, layered with harmonious backing vocals. It all builds to a crescendo with a guitar solo drenched in reverb played by Bay himself.

Gabe Simon has worked with other notable artists, including Jessie Murph ("Pray") and Lana Del Rey ("Blue Banisters") and also produced Noah Kahan's entire Stick Season album.
