Songfacts®:

  • "Burn Down The Disco" is about the dizzying, all-consuming rush of a romantic attraction. What starts as a crush quickly turns volatile, as raw, frantic desire takes over.

"Burn Down The Disco is the unveiling of obsession within a relationship," Marriott explained upon its release. "The deconstruction of the version of yourself you display to someone, to be replaced by unabashed, destructive yearning. I wanted to write a song which hit you hard and fast, whose lyrics matched the energy of feeling like you're losing your mind for someone."
  • Known for keeping his personal life private, Marriott hasn't named a specific muse for the track, focusing instead on capturing the universal intensity of obsession.
  • The song title echoes the famous refrain from The Smiths' 1986 classic "Panic."

    Burn down the disco
    Hang the blessed DJ

Morrissey wants to torch the dancefloor because the music playing on it feels meaningless, while Marriott wishes to take his desire for his love interest to its destructive extreme.
  • Marriott co-wrote the track with his longtime Finnish producer Aleksi "Psylla" Kiiskinen, a key collaborator since his 2023 debut album, Are We There Yet?, along with his touring bandmates Jono Suter (keyboards), Matt Gavin (guitar), and Louis Salanson (guitar/percussion). Programmer Juho Koskivirta and recording engineer Eeli Savolainen also hold writing credits.
  • Marriott debuted "Burn Down The Disco" live at Latitude Festival on July 25, 2026, followed by sets at Reading and Leeds on the BBC Radio 1 main-stage circuit. The track landed as a single on September 4, 2026.
  • The music video was directed by Herbie Elton, who also helmed the clip for Marriott's earlier single "California Rain." Marriott leaned into the song's chaotic energy with a tongue-in-cheek superhero concept, calling it "the perfect excuse to be a (terrible) superhero in a music video, having never reached these levels of anti-pop before." The visual co-stars actors Adam Collins, Asia Charles, and Nic Rowley.
