Songfacts®:

  • In despair over a heartbreak, Jason Aldean resorts to shots of tequila to drown his sorrows. Though it gives him some short-term comfort, the singer acknowledges the distilled beverage will do him more harm than good. One drink leads to another, because the tequila gives him false hope his ex will return to him. At 2 a.m. Aldean is still downing shots and continually checking his phone to see if she's gotten back in touch.
  • Two of Aldean's band members, Kurt Allison and Tully Kennedy, wrote the song with John Morgan and John Dee Edwards.

John Morgan is a singer-songwriter signed by Aldean to Night Train Records. Allison, Kennedy and Morgan also co-wrote Aldean's duet with Carrie Underwood, "If I Didn't Love You," and another hit single, "Trouble With A Heartbreak."

Nashville songwriter John Dee Edwards previously co-penned another of Aldean's drinking songs, "Blame It On You," along with Allison and Kennedy. Edwards' other Aldean cuts include "In Case You Don't Remember" and "Like You Were Mine," both times again with Kennedy.
  • The tequila song canon is one of pop music's lengthier ones. The Champs, The Eagles, Joe Nichols and Randy Rogers Band all pay tribute to the Mexican brew as a happy-go-lucky party drink. Others proceed along a similar route as Aldean by treating it as a tonic for the broken-hearted (Dan + Shay's "Tequila") or an addictive alcoholic beverage (Kenny Chesney's "You and Tequila").
  • "That's What Tequila Does" is a track on the Macon half of Jason Aldean's Macon, Georgia split-album release. The country superstar's upbringing in Macon, Georgia, had a large influence on his career, hence the title. Also home to the Allman Brothers Band, Randy Crawford, Little Richard, and Otis Redding, the Peach State town was heavily instrumental in his musical background. "Growing up in an environment that was a crossroads between country music, Southern rock, blues and R&B, it was just natural to blend different sounds in my on way," he said.
