Vocalist Colbie Caillat appears on this jazzy, piano-based ballad, which Jerrod Niemann penned with Richie Brown. Niemann told Billboard magazine that the Californian singer recorded her part not in a studio, but a hotel room. "I talked to her on the phone a few times. I was just so blown away that she could do her recording in a hotel room," he said. "It was so unconventional. To work with someone like her is a real honor."
"Islands in the Stream" was originally written by The Bee Gees as an R&B song. It was originally written by the brothers for Marvin Gaye, however it was recorded instead as a duet by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton with the Gibb Brothers also contributing vocals.
