Songfacts®:

  • "He Belongs" is Jhené Aiko's sly reversal of a familiar piece of hip-hop slang. Recorded for her album Westside Whimsy, the song takes the phrase "she belongs to the streets," a meme popularized by Future, and points it right back at the guys.

He belongs to the streets, yeah
He belongs to every woman he meets
    He belongs to the people
But he don't belong to me
  • Saying someone "belongs to the streets" usually labels them too disloyal or noncommittal for a serious relationship. The phrase spread virally around 2019 and 2020, kicked off by a widely circulated clip of Future and Young Thug using the line. Future reinforced it in a series of May 2020 tweets ("Let the streets cover her tab... She belongs to the streets") while commenting on a woman he felt was using a father for financial gain. Other rappers picked up the slang, including Drake on "Pipe Down," where he uses it to describe a partner keeping her options open.

For Aiko, adopting the expression is a clean break: if this guy wants to live for the crowd, he can do it somewhere else. Instead of aiming the insult at women, Aiko flips the target. She sends her unfaithful ex out to the avenues, alleyways, and boulevards, writing him off as a "fun time, one time kind of guy" who shouldn't be taken seriously. It's a sharp role reversal, turning a common dismissal into a way to dismiss him right back.
  • The track kicked off online rumors that Aiko was writing about Big Sean, her former partner and the father of her son. Fans pointed to lyrics echoing their public history, including Sean's past comments about hesitation over marriage. But Aiko shut down the gossip directly. When a fan on Threads claimed the song was about Sean stepping out, she responded with a simple reality check: "Song is not about him."

Still, the speculation didn't die down easily. Another Westside Whimsy track, "Ceiling (Freestyle)," drops even more pointed lines about a partner messing with other women, fueling further fan theories. When someone asked if she was ripping into Big Sean across the entire record, Aiko offered another one-word answer: "No."
  • Aiko co-wrote "He Belongs" alongside Julian-Quán Viet Lê and the production duo Fisticuffs (Brian Warfield and Mac Robinson). The team is a familiar crew for Aiko, having handled production across much of the Westside Whimsy tracklist.
