Songfacts®:

  • This is the lead single from Jimmy Eat World's seventh studio album Invented. The single was digitally released and began receiving radio airplay on August 10, 2010. It was the American alternative rock band's first release for three years and at the beginning of this track, lead singer Jim Adkins sums up their hiatus proclaiming, "It's been a long time."
  • Adkins said of the track on his record label's website: "The song is about finding your individuality in a world where extremes are more and more presented as your only option."
  • The music video was directed by Ron Winter. Said Adkins: "We thought taking a science-fiction approach would be a great way to demonstrate breaking free of what may be expected from an individual. We loved director Ron Winter's work and thought he was the perfect choice to help."
  • Bassist Rick Burch was asked by CMU in a 2010 interview how the band create a track. He replied: "There's no one set process. But sometimes we'll be jamming in our rehearsal space and we'll have an initial idea, or something will happen, and that will build from a melody into a song. Or someone will come in with a strong melody already thought out, or one of us will have a song pretty much complete, and we'll just fine tune it."
