Joe Jackson is an English singer, songwriter, pianist, and composer whose restless curiosity carried him from new wave and punk pop through jazz, swing, classical composition, and beyond, defying easy categorization at every turn. Best known for hits like "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" and "Steppin' Out," Jackson has treated genre as a suggestion rather than a rule since his 1979 debut album, Look Sharp!, moving from pop hits to a Grammy-winning symphony without ever settling into one lane.
Jackson's musical education started with The Beatles, but it quickly expanded. "They were my roots but learning about classical and then jazz taught me music was a whole world, not just one little thing. I was interested in everything," he told Mojo magazine.
His path into music started as an escape route rather than a calling. At age 11, Jackson joined his school's violin class specifically to avoid sports, only to become absorbed by music theory and the piano soon after.
At age 18, Jackson won a scholarship to study musical composition at London's Royal Academy of Music, where he studied under composer Richard Stoker. During his time there, Jackson shared classrooms with future Eurythmics singer Annie Lennox.
Before landing a record deal, Jackson worked as the musical director for a Playboy Club in Portsmouth, a gig that helped support him while he built the demo tape that eventually became Look Sharp!.
Long before health anxiety became a media staple, Jackson was writing about it. His 1982 song "Cancer" tackled society's growing paranoia over what causes disease. Jackson told Songfacts in 2012 he believes the song "is more relevant now than it was then," given how relentless health scare reporting has become.
Jackson is a vocal opponent of smoking bans, publishing a 2005 pamphlet titled "The Smoking Issue" and a 2007 essay called "Smoke, Lies and the Nanny State." He took aim at the topic musically as well with his satirical track "20-0-3."
Jackson has a fraught relationship with film scoring. He once walked away from a project because he refused to navigate studio politics or endure nitpicking from an eight-person committee, explaining that the entire experience hinges on his relationship with the director.
His 1999 chamber pop work Symphony No. 1, performed with a band of jazz and rock musicians, earned Jackson a Grammy Award in 2001 for Best Pop Instrumental Album.

"You could have knocked me down with a feather as they say," remembered Jackson to Mojo magazine. "I really think it's a case of the Grammy voters never hearing it, seeing my name as the only one they recognized and thinking, 'Maybe it's time he had a Grammy.' It's so ironic I got it for that, not for Steppin' Out, but there you go. I'm still very proud of it."
