Songfacts®:

  • Prior to performing this song on The Tonight Show in 1974, Denver said he wrote it for his wife Annie whom he had to leave behind when he was touring early on in his career because he couldn't afford to take her with him. Doubtless Annie appreciated the sentiment, but she didn't appreciate the other women who kept him company when he was away from home; she divorced him in 1982.
  • "Follow Me" runs to 2 minutes 27 seconds, and was produced by Milton Okun, who arranged it with Denver. It was published by Cherry Lane Music, and was released on the RCA label in 1970 as a promo for the album Take Me To Tomorrow.
  • Denver also wrote "Annie's Song" for his first wife, one of his most famous compositions. >>>

  • Mossy Stone from Kentucky, UsaI realized that I’ve been humming this song when I’m in a good mood for decades. Still, I had to look up the lyrics. I don’t know it’s possible significance, maybe that’s my deepest desire? Denver was one of my family’s favorite artists and his music accompanied our fun times. I’m 57 and during my early years I loved The Muppets and associate them with Denver.
