Songfacts®:

  • John Legend told MTV News that this love ballad, "is a song about a relationship that's falling apart and we don't know what's going to happen with it." He added: "You can get advice from everybody else. Everybody thinks they know what's going on, but nobody really knows. And it's really just saying, 'We all go through these things, but you don't really know what someone else is going through unless you are them.'"
  • The song's video was shot in New York City and features Legend wandering the streets of downtown Manhattan, interspersed with shots of couples of assorted ages, races and sexual orientation illustrating the universal theme of the song. Legend explained to MTV News: "The concept behind the video is, we're getting a slice of life in New York, different people going through different life issues, different relationships. Just showing how everybody experiences love, and me, myself, you know, I'm just performing and contemplating a failed relationship and hoping we can give it one more try."
