Songfacts®:

  • Here, Jorja Smith recounts the story of a relationship where there is a communication gap. "I don't know if you want me to come over," the British R&B singer ponders. "I wish I could read your mind."

Popcaan joins in halfway through and it becomes clear he's just as thrown by their hot-and-cold relationship. The Jamaican singer-rapper just can't figure out what is going on inside Smith's head.
  • Smith said this dancehall-flavored R&B song is inspired by "that unsure feeling when you're talking to someone and you can't tell how much they're into you and you're chasing them when - really - it can be straight up and no one should be playing games."
  • "Come Over" marks the first time Smith and Popcaan have worked on a song together.
  • Smith and Popcaan wrote the song with:

London-born musician Marlon Roudette, who is the son of music producer Cameron McVey (Massive Attack, All Saints, Sugababes) and the stepson of singer Neneh Cherry. He has co-penned several songs for his step sister Mabel, including the hit singles "Finders Keepers" and "Fine Line." Roudette also had his own UK Top 10 hit in 2014 with "When The Beat Drops Out."

Portland, Oregon producer Pasqué, who is best known for his work with the rapper/singer Aminé.

Frequent Popcaan colloborator Dre Skull. The Brooklyn-based producer also has credits on songs by Snoop Lion ("Lighters Up") and PartyNextDoor ("Not Nice").

MadisonLST, whose other credits include Ski Mask the Slump God's "Reborn to Rebel." MadisonLST also produced the track with IZAÏAH.
  • Smith first teased the song on February 21, 2020, but held back on dropping it because of the COVID-19 stay-at-home order, explaining: "This is why I'm not putting it out right now, because I'm not trying to give any wrong messages. No, do not come and visit your friends!"

Smith eventually released the single on October 1, 2020.
  • Amber Grace Johnson directed the neon-drenched anime-style visual with animation by Future Power Stations. Johnson also shot Smith's "Be Honest" clip.
