  • "Spoiled" is a soulful, heartfelt breakup ballad that follows a girl as she struggles to move on from her ex. The depth and intensity of his love has left her feeling "spoiled" as she sings about the difficulties in finding a boy that matches up to him. A 17-year-old Joss Stone elaborated in an interview with YM in 2004: "It's about a guy who loves you so much that he's ruined you for anyone else."
  • Stone wrote this song with the veteran Motown producer Lamont Dozier and his son, Beau Dozier. Speaking to Daily Express in 2005, Stone revealed how she and Beau fell for each other while working on "Spoiled."

"He came up with this one lyric," Stone said. "He said, 'I've never seen the word 'love' so personified as I do with you.' And he looked at me when he said it. And I was like, 'Oh my God!'"

She continued: "But it's weird, because I don't really get like that with people – I'm always about, 'OK, let's write a song, then can I go home?' But he's very special. He loves me and I love him."

The couple ended their relationship in late 2005.
  • "Spoiled" features a range of soul and R&B legends, including "Clean Up Woman" singer Betty Wright, who produced and provided backing vocals for the song. It also features Willie "Little Beaver" Hale on guitar, "Why Can't We Live Together" singer Timmy Thomas on Hammond organ, and Blues Hall of Fame inductee Latimore on piano. These musicians also performed on Stone's debut album, 2003's The Soul Sessions.
  • The music video, directed by Joseph Kahn, was shot at West Taghkanic Diner in West Taghkanic, New York. It follows Stone and her boyfriend, played by American model James Guardino, on an evening out. As the night progresses, tensions increase between the pair, prompting them to flee the diner in their respective cars. A few moments later, fate takes an unexpected turn, and the two vehicles collide. Stone and her boyfriend are flung from their driver seats in slow motion before the clip starts rewinding to the opening scene at the diner.

Fun fact: Kahn also killed off the guys from Korn with a fatal car accident in the music video for "A.D.I.D.A.S."
  • On April 11, 2005, Stone performed this song at VH1 Save the Music: A Concert to Benefit the VH1 Save the Music Foundation. Stone also covered "Try a Little Tenderness" with Donna Summer, "Tell Me Something Good" with John Legend, and "Hot Legs" with Rod Stewart at the event, which was held at the Beacon Theatre in New York.
  • "Spoiled" features on Stone's sophomore album, Mind Body & Soul. It peaked at #32 in the UK and was the lowest-charting single from the album. Mind Body & Soul, on the other hand, was a huge success, peaking at #1. As a result, Stone became the youngest woman to top the chart in the UK, a record that remained unbroken until 2019, when Billie Eilish reached #1 with her debut album, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?.
