Songfacts®:

  • On "Monsters," the lead single from Joyner Lucas' 2026 ADHD 2 (Reloaded) album, the rapper is struggling to escape his inner demons. Becoming rich and famous hasn't healed his childhood wounds or helped rebuild his self-esteem, and neither has traditional therapy or prayer. After years of hiding his true identity behind a more confident alter-ego that the world sees, he struggles to recognize himself anymore. He comes to the conclusion that he has to become his own hero to finally conquer the monsters in his head:

See, I need self-love and my own words
But I know I gotta let my soul decide
Think about peace when I close my eyes
Only I can save me from my own demise
    .
  • ADHD 2 (Reloaded) is a reissue of Lucas' 2025 album, ADHD 2, that contains eight new tracks, including "Monsters" and the followup single "GTA 6."
  • The song opens with the chorus, with guest vocalist Reece Bullimore singing about the monsters that plague his mind before Lucas launches into his rap. Bullimore is the eldest son of Andrew "BullySongs" Bullimore, formerly of the English pop-rap group Bullybeatz, who also served as one of the producers on "Monsters." Reece started his professional music career at 10 years old when he lent his vocals to the single "No Money" by the Swedish electronic duo Galantis in 2016.
  • ADHD is a big theme in Lucas' music and was also the title of his 2020 debut album. The rapper was diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder as a child and the lack of support he received from the adults in his life created a lot of the internal struggles that come to light on "Monsters."

"People are going to make you feel crazy, make you feel stupid, make you feel less than, make you feel like you can't push through and become great because you're different," he said of his experience with ADHD in a 2022 Billboard interview. "Use me as an example as someone who was able to overcome and break through. Use all your creativity and tap into your ADHD powers. You have something to bring to the world and they will love you for it."
  • Lucas said "Monsters" would have been an appropriate song for the Stranger Things soundtrack. The Netflix sci-fi series, which ran from 2016 to 2025, followed a group of kids in the '80s who had to battle literal monsters and learn how to embrace the qualities that made themselves outcasts. Lucas was a fan of the series, and the 2018 single "Stranger Things," a collaboration with Chris Brown, was named after the show and was built on a sample of its theme song.
