Songfacts®:

  • The first song dropped by Justin Timberlake following his Man of the Woods album is a dance banger. It finds him stepping out of the woods, following the country vibes of that record.
  • Released the day before 2018's Independence Day, "Soulmate" starts with Timberlake proclaiming that "summer starts now" before he proceeds to describe a one-night stand over a pulsating dance beat. According to our dictionary, a 'soulmate' is a person to whom one is deeply emotionally or spiritually attached. We're not quite sure that Timberlake actually gets the concept of the word.
  • Justin Timberlake wrote the song with frequent collaborator James Fauntleroy as well as Brian Casey, Gary Smith, Lechas Young and Brandon Casey. It was recorded in the Bahamas just a week before its release along with co-producer Nineteen85. The Canadian also supplied the beats for Drake's hits "Hotline Bling," "Too Good" and "One Dance."
