Songfacts®:

  • This song was written by Bob Halligan, Jr. and his wife Linda. Halligan recorded it with his Celtic rock band Ceili Rain and released it on their debut album, Say KAY-lee, in 1997, the same year Kathy Mattea covered it.

In a Songfacts interview with Halligan, he talked about the meaning: "It's the whole idea that people can be separated geographically but it doesn't affect their connectedness emotionally."
  • "Love Travels" is the title track to Kathy Mattea's 10th album. Released as a single, it went to #39 on the Country chart.
  • Musically, there's a lot going on in this song, with pedal steel guitar, pennywhistle, accordion, cello, fiddle and even bagpipes in the mix. The song's co-writer, Bob Halligan, Jr., added piano and acoustic guitar.
  • One of the backup singers on "Love Travels" is Michael McDonald. He and Mattea teamed up two years later to duet on a single called "Among The Missing."
  • Mattea wasn't done covering Ceili Rain songs; on her 2002 album Roses, she included her version of their song "That's All The Lumber You Sent."
