Songfacts®:

  • When Katy Nichole was 5, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, a debilitating condition that causes the spine to have a sideways curve. Nichole underwent surgery 10 years later to straighten her spine, but distressed by the persistent pain, she experienced post-surgery depression. After a second surgery two years later, the teen experienced a supernatural physical and emotional healing.

Nichole started sharing her story, explaining to friends how God was in the details. "How His hand was on everything," Nichole told New Release Today, "even when it was hard to see Him."

One person she shared with told her she should write about that, so she penned "God Is In This Story."
  • If it reads like addiction, if it reads like disease
He's the One who frees the prison, He's the healer of all things
If it reads like depression, if it reads broken home
He's the One who holds your sorrow, He won't leave you here alone

The bridge is Nichole's favorite part of the song. "Addiction, depression, disease, and broken homes are real issues people can relate to," she explained. "These are dark things."
  • Nichole originally titled the song "God Is In My Story," but changed it to "God Is In This Story." "He's not just in my story but in all our stories," she said.
  • Katy Nichole wrote "God Is In This Story" with two experienced songwriters her label paired her with: Ethan Hulse and the song's producer Jeff Pardo. They penned the song early on in her songwriting sessions when she came to Nashville. The track was originally supposed to be her first single, but that changed after Nichole penned "In Jesus Name (God of Possible)." Instead, she released it as its followup on June 10, 2022.
  • "God Is In This Story" is a duet with Mike Weaver of the Christian band Big Daddy Weave.
  • Producer Jeff Pardo plays the piano and keyboard. The other musicians are:

    Jacob Arnold: percussion and drums

Court Clement: pedal steel guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, mandolin and bouzouki

Nickie Conley, Kiley Phillips and Jason Eskridge: background vocals

Raised in Nashville, guitarist Court Clement has worked on stage and in the studio with a variety of musicians since 2003. They include Matthew West, TobyMac and Anne Wilson. Clement played banjo, bass, dobro, acoustic guitar and electric guitar on Anne Wilson's hit single "My Jesus."
  • Nichole recorded "God Is In This Story" for her debut self-titled EP. She wrote the record from an honest place, holding nothing back. "I'm so unashamed to say the name of Jesus and to tell people how good He really is and how treasured by God they are," Nichole said. "I want people to know that my God is good even though my circumstances are not always good."
  • The song ascended to #1 on Billboard's Hot Christian Songs chart, giving Nicole her second chart-topper following "In Jesus Name (God of Possible)." It was Big Daddy Weave's third visit to the summit, following "Every Time I Breathe" in 2006 and "Redeemed" in 2012.
