Songfacts®:

  • Kelly Clarkson wed Brandon Blackstock, stepson of Reba McEntire, on October 20, 2013. Their romance had all the makings of a fairy tale... until it came crashing down in a messy divorce. The pop icon filed papers in 2020 but the split was not officially finalized until 2022 after a long and bitter legal battle.

Clarkson poured all her raw emotions into her 10th album, Chemistry, which tells the story of their intense and complex relationship from start to finish. This song follows The Voice coach's emotional process of self-healing.
  • "Mine" is an emotional ballad that begins with raw vulnerability as Clarkson reflects on the pain of heartbreak and the challenges of rebuilding her life after divorce.

And now I second-guess my thoughts, every step I take
I'm losing hope in love and I've lost all in faith
Yeah, for a dream that I just close my eyes and it's all blank
    I have you to thank

The spare instrumentation and Clarkson's powerful vocals create a haunting atmosphere, drawing the listener into the depths of her emotions.
  • Clarkson bares her soul and expresses her yearning for justice as she wants Blackstock to feel the pain of a love that is suddenly snatched away, just as she experienced it.

    Someone's gonna show you
How a heart can be used
    Like you did mine

The lyrics convey her feelings of having her light dimmed by the relationship and the longing for her ex to experience the same fate in return.
  • Gabby Barrett's 2019 hit "I Hope" has a similar theme of wanting her ex to feel the same pain he caused her.
  • Clarkson wrote the song with Eric Serna and her frequent collaborator Jesse Shatkin, who also produced it.
  • "Mine" was released as a double A-side lead single from Chemistry along with "Me" on April 14, 2023. "We decided to release 'Mine' and 'Me' at the same time because I didn't want to release just one song to represent an entire album or relationship," explained Clarkson. "There are many stages of grief and loss on this album. Each song is a different stage and emotional state."
