Koe Wetzel (full name: Ropyr Madison Koe Wetzel), hails from Pittsburg, Texas. His music is a heady mix of Lone Star twang with a rebellious streak, heavily influenced by grunge legends like Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Wetzel comes from a musically inclined family. His mother, Julie Wetzel, was a country music singer, which influenced his early exposure to music. He made his stage debut at the tender age of 6 belting out tunes alongside his mom on tour.
His middle name, Koe, a tribute to outlaw country singer David Allan Coe, became his stage name.
In high school, Wetzel excelled in both football and baseball, and he landed a football scholarship at Tarleton State University. But as his love for music grew, the thrill of the gridiron faded. In 2012, Wetzel traded in the cleats for a microphone, leaving college behind to chase his musical dreams.
Wetzel bypassed the traditional Nashville route to success. He built his fanbase independently, touring relentlessly and releasing music directly to fans. This DIY approach earned him a fiercely loyal following who connect with his authenticity.
Wetzel's high-energy shows are known for their mosh pits and passionate crowds, blurring the lines between country concert and rock spectacle.
In 2017, Wetzel released his debut album, Noise Complaint, which ignited his career. The record resonated with fans who craved a country sound unafraid to get loud and real.
In 2020, Wetzel released Sellout, named in reference to his signing with major label Columbia Records. It came with plenty of explicit lyric warnings.

"Most everybody in the Texas and red dirt scene does the same thing," Wetzel told Music Row about his DIY beginnings. "We were on the road for eight or nine years before we signed with Columbia. There was a long time period before we even signed a record deal that everything was all grassroots, all completely us. We decided [to sign because] there's only so much you can do for so long until you need somebody else's help. We weren't ashamed to say that."
Despite his unconventional path, Wetzel has achieved mainstream success. Several of his singles, including "Creeps," "Cabo" and "Damn Near Normal," have reached the Top 40 of both Billboard's Country chart and Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, showcasing his crossover appeal. He officially became a Billboard Hot 100-charting hitmaker when "Sweet Dreams" debuted on the chart dated June 1, 2024, at #47.
