Songfacts®:

  • A pessimist by nature, Korn vocalist Jonathan Davis constantly worries that trouble is around the corner. Even when life is peaceful, thoughts that something unfortunate is about to happen disquiets him. And when things aren't going so well, Davis fears the "worst is on its way."

"Right now everything is going good," the singer told Metal Hammer, "but always in the back of my head I'm just waiting for that next bad thing to happen."
  • "Worst Is On Its Way" is the closing track of Requiem. The album is a complex meditation on grief, following the death of Davis' estranged wife Deven in August 2018. "I thought it was an amazing way to end the record because it's all about me battling the darkness and coming out on top," said the Korn frontman, "but life is a never-ending loop and there's always more bulls--t ahead."
  • Korn co-wrote and produced "Worst Is On Its Way" with Requiem producer Chris Collier. Recorded in their California studio during the pandemic, the freedom from time constraints gave the Bakersfield band an opportunity to experiment. Collier pushed Korn to innovate rather than regurgitate their back catalogue.

"He was always the guy saying 'uhhh not that riff. I've heard that before from Korn,'" guitarist Munky told Wall Of Sound. "That's on 1995 Life Is Peachy or whatever. You get so excited like 'oh dude I got this...' and they're like 'yeah but it sounds like No Place To Hide or some s--t like this' and it's good to have somebody speak up in the room, otherwise you'll get invested in this whole wasting your time going down this road you've already been down."
  • Craig Bernard and Culley Bunker directed the high-budget video. Filled with visual effects, it captures Korn performing the song as the band members get decomposed into animated particles.
