Songfacts®:

  • Here, Lady A pay tribute to the effect a song can have on a listener when it enters into their heart.

It can make you dance and make you cry
Make you wanna give it one more try
Start a band, and kiss that girl
    And break some rules
It'll make you give your heart and get it back
Change your mind just like that
  • Ryan Hurd co-wrote the lyrics alongside Lady A's Charles Kelley, Sam Ellis and Laura Veltz. "That was the first time I co-wrote with Charles, and he's been a good friend and a good mentor to me," Hurd told Billboard. "It was a song about songs, without doing that thing where it mentions actual songs. I thought it was a creative way to approach it."
  • Much of Lady A's oeuvre finds either Hillary Scott or Charles Kelley taking lead vocals. However, "What a Song Can Do" finds the two vocalists sharing the mike. Other Lady A tracks where they sing together include "I Run To You" and "American Honey."
  • Producer Dann Huff arrangement mixes pedal steel and programing. The instrumentation is by:

Acoustic guitar: Lady A's Dave Haywood and Ilya Toshinskiy
    Steel Guitar: Paul Franklin
    Electric guitar: Tom Bukovac
    Bass: Jimmie Lee Sloas
Hammond B3 organ and piano: Gordon Mote
    Keyboards: Dave Cohen
    Synthesizer: Charlie Judge
    Piano: Charlie Judge
    Drums: Aaron Sterling
