Songfacts®:

  • After dissing an insincere boyfriend in "Fingers Crossed" and missing red flags in a relationship in "Flowers," here Lauren Spencer-Smith warns other girls not to fall for a narcissist.
  • Named after the Greek god Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection, a narcissist is a self-centered person who has an excessive preoccupation with his own needs, often at the expense of others. In this song, Lauren Spencer Smith cautions other girls not to succumb to a narcissist's charms. Initially, they come across as charismatic and over-generous, but after a few months, you'll see what he's really like.

You'll make an excuse, they'll say that it's you
And the mirror's telling you it's true
Won't leave, can't stay, how much are you gonna take?
'Cause you'll always get the blame

The guy is so conceited, he never sees himself as being in the wrong. Instead, he will turn the tables and lay the blame on his girlfriend. He emotionally wrecks her by covertly manipulating events and situations that sow seeds of doubt.

The only thing they're good at is knowing how to gaslight

    Narcissist boyfriends are unfaithful too.

Then make you feel like you're the most beautiful in the world
While they're sleeping with another girl

Spencer-Smith ends her warning with the admission she's speaking from personal experience, having herself fallen in love with a narcissist.
  • Lauren Spencer Smith wrote the song with the track's producer, Greg Kurstin, and her "Fingers Crossed" collaborator, Fransisca Hall. Kurstin has also written and produced hits for the likes of Kelly Clarkson ("What Doesn't Kill You (Stronger)"), Sia ("Cheap Thrills"), and Adele ("Hello," "Easy On Me").
