Songfacts®:

  • "MUTT" is a song about trust issues... with a side of canine philosophy. It's a brooding, soulful track where Leon Thomas is reluctant to let his guard down. He sings about seeing past pretty faces and having trouble trusting, but he comes around and allows himself to be open to the possibilities.
  • The song is the title track from Thomas' second album, and was released as its lead single on August 9, 2024. A remix featuring Freddie Gibbs arrived three weeks later.
  • The inspiration for this song and the rest of the album came from a rather unexpected place: Thomas' dog. Or, more specifically, the dog his ex gave him before they split. While adjusting to life post-breakup, Thomas noticed that his pup, who had never received formal training, was a bit of a handful. In time, it dawned on him that he and his dog had more in common than he'd like to admit.

"It made me think about the give and take in relationships and the struggle for obedience," Thomas explained. He noted the dog is a mutt: imperfect but well-meaning, messy but loyal. And just like that, an album theme was born: a metaphor for not being a perfect partner but having the best of intentions.
  • "MUTT" features a smooth, piano-led R&B production with crisp, kick-heavy percussion, courtesy of producers Freaky Rob ("Shirt" by SZA, "Fire" by SiR) and D. Phelps ("Home" by MGK, X Ambassadors & Bebe Rexha, and "Let Me Know" by Brent Faiyaz).
  • The music video for the Freddie Gibbs remix, directed by Daniil Demichev, takes Thomas' commitment issues and turns them into a chase sequence. Demichev uses slow-motion cinematography to symbolize his attempt to slow down and process his emotions.

Born in 2000 in Moscow, Demichev later moved to Los Angeles and established himself in the industry. His other credits include the video for Muse's song "Compliance."
  • As for chart performance, "MUTT" made its debut at #100 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the tracking week ending February 8, 2025 to give Thomas his first entry on the chart.
  • Leon Thomas made his live television debut when he performed this song on the February 6, 2025 episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert.
  • On March 21, 2025, Leon Thomas released a second remix of "MUTT" featuring Chris Brown. He previewed the remix live during a performance at The Garden in Dallas the previous weekend. Their other collaborations include Thomas co-writing Zendaya and Brown's "Something New" in 2016 and co-producing "Emerald / Burgundy" on Brown's Indigo album in 2019.
