Songfacts®:

  • Lionel Richie could really deliver a love song. He did it with his band the Commodores in the '70s, writing and singing lead on songs like "Three Times A Lady" and "Still." In 1981, he wrote the smash duet "Endless Love," which he performed with Diana Ross. As a solo artist, he didn't slow his roll, and by 1984 he was one of the biggest hit-makers in music, still reliably delivering love songs. "Stuck On You" finds him finally realizing that the girl of his dreams has been right in front of him all along. He's ready to promote her out of the friendzone and into his heart.
  • Like most of Richie's singles at this time, "Stuck On You" went to #1 on the Adult Contemporary chart and made a strong showing on the R&B chart, placing at #8. But the song was also marketed to country radio and even landed on the Country chart, reaching #24 and giving Richie his first appearance there. On the cover of the single, Richie is wearing a cowboy hat.
  • Richie was popular on MTV, but he didn't make a video for this song. The network probably wouldn't have aired it because it's too adult, and VH1 hadn't launched yet.
  • "Stuck On You" has been used in various commercials over the years, often for cleaning products. In 2022, it featured in a Pringles commercial where a guy gets his hand stuck in a can of the potato chips and lives with it the rest of his life. The spot aired during the 2022 Super Bowl.

  • Michael from ViennaI am very surprised that no one so far has written a comment on this song. Although I am not a real Lionel Richie fan, this is one of my all-time favourite songs. Since the first time I heard is has stuck in my head. For me it the classic song about home-coming. And the words "Yes, I am on my way" that are repeated like a mantra gives it nearly a religious touch.
