Little May are an Australian folk-rock trio, comprising vocalist Hannah Field and guitarists Liz Drummond and Annie Hamilton. Drummond told Billboard magazine that she penned this song in an hour after the girls had been inspired by listening to Big Scary's "Thinking About You."
Field nailed the vocals on her first attempt. "Hannah's lyrics are exactly the same as when she first sang them," Drummond said. "She's good like that. We recorded it on a voice memo and over time, re-jigged the structure and built upon it during rehearsals."
Eddie Vedder often changes the words when he sings "Yellow Ledbetter." The basic story is about a guy whose brother dies in the first Gulf War. Apparently, bad news in the army is given in yellow envelopes.
