Songfacts®:

  • Vocalist Taylor Rice got married in August 2018. This shimmering song finds him tracing that leap of faith as he sings about a journey along the California coastline toward Big Sur when he and his wife were dating.

Wait, when am I gonna lose you?
How will I let you slip through?
    Careless or unkind?
Trace the curving on the coastline
    The Santa Lucia cliffside
We'll stay here for the night

Rice is unable to enjoy the moment. He is a pessimist who believes that no matter how great something is, it's likely to eventually end.
  • Guitarist Ryan Hahn explained the track's meaning in a Consequence of Sound track by track:

"The song is about the feeling of being in an amazing relationship but feeling the fear and anxiety that it can't possibly last, whether just by twist of fate or because of your own self sabotage. It was inspired by a trip Taylor took to Big Sur with his, at the time, new girlfriend. He kept telling us how even when you're at your happiest it can be difficult not to put up those self-protective barriers."
  • The song's music video was directed by actor and director Van Alpert, whose other credits include Post Malone's "White Iverson." The clip is a collaboration with visual artist Public-Library and features actress Kate Mara wandering through Los Angeles.
