Songfacts®:

  • This Ashley Gorley, Dallas Davidson and Chris DeStefano penned song is an uptempo party rocker with hip-hop elements. "It's a big ole party, riot. The second it comes on, you've got to dance and shake and move your head back-and-forth," he said. "It's right up my alley. The second I heard it, I was like no doubt I'm cutting it."
  • The song follows on from other country-rap hybrids recorded by Nashville artists that include Jason Aldean's "Dirt Road Anthem," Brad Paisley's "Accidental Racist" and Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise."
  • Luke Bryan concludes the song's chorus by singing:

    "Floatin' down the Flint River
Catch us up a little catfish dinner
    Gonna sound like a winner
When I lay you down and love you right
Yeah, that's my kind of night."

Bryan told Chicago's WUSN that he misidentified some of the words when laying down the song. "I was singing 'winner winner' in the studio, 'cause I knew the song from a demo," he recalled. "And I was going, 'winner, winner,' and my producer goes, [speaker sound effects], 'Luke, it's actually 'winner, when I.' And I went, 'Ohhhhhhhh!' Hey! It doesn't matter. It works either way."
  • The song leapt 35-1 in its third chart week on the Hot Country Songs tally, giving Bryan his fifth chart-topper. It stayed at the #1 position for 11 consecutive weeks.
  • The song didn't find itself in its final form until late into the studio process. "I had to take some direction on that song. My approach on it was a little weird. Me and Jeff [Stevens, producer] and I went around and around about it," said Bryan. "I gave up a little bit and he gave up a little bit, and that's just making a record. Once we got out of there, we were smiling and high-fiving and happy."
  • In an interview with the Vancouver radio station 93.7 JR, Zac Brown called this "one of the worst songs I've ever heard," adding, "When songs make me wanna throw up, it makes me ashamed to even be in the same genre as those songs."

Jason Aldean responded on Instagram: "Nobody gives a s--t what u think. Its a big ol hit so apparently the fans love it which is what matters. Keep doin ur thing LB!!!"
  • Might sit down on my diamond plate tailgate
Put in my country-rock hip-hop mixtape
    Little Conway, a little T-Pain
    Might just make it rain

The rapper T-Pain actually lived in Nashville for a while, ghostwriting for country artists from 2014 to 2016. "Everybody kept trying to figure out why Luke Bryan was saying 'T-Pain' in all his songs for a second," he told Billboard
