• "String By" is Mack Geiger's neo-traditional country breakup ballad about breaking free from a one-sided, addictive relationship. The title flips the old phrase "string someone along" into a sharp exit line: Geiger is done being an emotional fallback, telling his ex to go manipulate somebody else.
• While the lyrics feel deeply autobiographical, Geiger hasn't named a specific real-life ex as the inspiration behind the track. He wrote the song around a universal experience, meaning the woman in the lyrics is better understood as a composite of bad relationships rather than a public tell-all about a real ex.
• The song plays on a couple of layers. To string someone along usually means keeping someone hooked with just enough attention to stop them from walking away. Geiger takes it a step further, picturing himself as a toy on a string that gets pulled whenever it's convenient. When he sings, "Find someone else to string by," he's drawing a hard line; he's no longer on call whenever she needs a quick confidence boost.

  "Karma Chameleon" by Culture Club (1983): Boy George takes a lighter, pop approach with the line "you string along," calling out a fickle lover who comes and goes whenever they please.
  
  "String Me Along" by Melissa O'Neil (2005): O'Neil digs into the same push-and-pull dynamic, using puppet imagery to describe a partner who keeps her trapped in endless waiting games.
  
  "Knife Edge" by Thom Yorke (2024): Yorke uses the phrase as a nervous warning ("You'd better not be fooling 'round. Or stringing me along"), capturing the anxiety of not knowing where you stand.
• Jared Adlam produced, recorded, and mixed the track. The Gold Coast-based producer and multi-instrumentalist, who took home Producer of the Year at the 2023 Gold Coast Music Awards, produced all six tracks on Geiger's debut EP, Walk a Straight Line.
• Dropped as a single on October 31, 2025, "String By" led off Walk a Straight Line. The track eventually handed Geiger his breakout milestone: a debut on the Billboard Hot 100 at #95 on the chart dated August 22, 2026.
• Geiger told Entertainment Focus he believed in the song on release but did not expect it to "change everything." At the time it began gaining traction, he was working at his aunt and uncle's remote cattle station in Queensland's Gulf country, and he lost his phone out on the range. Cut off from the world for days, he had no idea the song had started taling off in the US.
• On the heels of the success of "String By," Geiger signed a joint record deal with RECORDS Nashville and Columbia Records in March 2026.
