Songfacts®:

  • This heartbreaking pop ballad is a collaboration between Marshmello and the Jonas Brothers. It finds the siblings singing about a one-night stand where they've left the girl alone in her bed. They've got heartbreak issues, so concerned that the relationship might develop into something serious, the Jonas Brothers "leave before you love me."
  • Nick and Joe Jonas supply the vocals; brother Kevin plays guitar.
  • Marshmello co-wrote and co-produced the song with:

Richard Boardman and Pablo Bowman of the English songwriting collective The Six. They previously teamed with Marshmello for his collaboration with Anne-Marie, "Friends."

British songwriter Phil Plested (Little Mix's "Touch," Lewis Capaldi's "Before You Go").

English producer Nick Gale, a.k.a. Digital Farm Animals (Dua Lipa's "Be The One," KSI's "Holiday").

Swedish DJ and record producer Alesso, whose collaborations with Calvin Harris ("Under Control") and Tove Lo ("Heroes") were worldwide smash hits.

Will Vaughn also contributed to the writing of the song and Heavy Mellow to its production.
  • Christian Arnold, David Martin, and Geoff Morrow also receive credits because "Leave Before You Love" interpolates their song "Can't Smile Without You," recorded by Barry Manilow, into its chorus.
  • Marshmello and the Jonas Brothers released "Leave Before You Love Me" on May 21, 2021. The quartet debuted the song live two days later when they performed it at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards.
