Songfacts®:

  • Mary J. Blige duets with Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey of Jodeci on this song from her debut album, What's The 411? The pair burn with passion throughout the track, and indeed, they were a couple in real life.

Blige and Jodeci were both signed to Uptown Records, but Jodeci was already well established, having released their debut album in 1991 with the hits "Forever My Lady," "Stay," and "Come And Talk To Me." Pairing K-Ci with Blige was a way to help ease her into the industry and provide a recognizable voice on the album.

Soon after recording the song, the pair got together, bringing to life the fiery love affair they portray on the duet. They kept it on the down-low, but after they split around 1997, Blige let on that their relationship was abusive at times, but she stuck with it because she couldn't bear to leave him.
  • Blige and Hailey performed this song live from time to time, including on The Arsenio Hall Show and on an MTV Unplugged special. Both singers can wring the emotion out of just about any song, but on this one they were singing from the heart directly to each other.
  • K-Ci's Jodeci mates Donald "DeVante Swing" DeGrate and Jo Jo Hailey (his brother) wrote this song with Darryl Pearson. DeGrate produced the track.
  • The What's The 411? album made Blige a star, and Jodeci kept going strong until their split in 1996. K-Ci co-wrote two tracks on her next album, My Life, released in 1994. In her 2021 My Life documentary, Blige revealed that some of the songs on the album were inspired by their roller-coaster love affair.
