• "Your Ghost Again" centers on grief and the haunting sensation of "seeing" a lost loved one in familiar places. The track pays tribute to former Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds, who died at age 51 in an Atlanta motorcycle accident on August 20, 2025, five months after departing the band. Investigators determined that Hinds was riding his Harley-Davidson well above the speed limit when he collided with an SUV at an intersection.
• The title refers to that involuntary sensation of encountering a "ghost" again and again in familiar surroundings. It isn't a literal haunting so much as the brain stubbornly expecting someone to be where they have always been, which is one of the many ways grief affects the human mind.
  
  Drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor said the song is about what happens "when you lose somebody that's close to you that you existed with for most of your life." While recording in the studio, Dailor kept catching glimpses of Hinds out of the corner of his eye, standing where he would normally have been with his guitar.
  
  Dailor experienced something similar after the passing of his mother, Michele Lawrence, six months before Hinds died. "Your mind plays tricks on you, especially so soon after someone dies and you're in the places where they always were," he explained. "You just see them."
• Bassist and vocalist Troy Sanders said his contribution to the lyrics was written entirely "for Brent." His bridge expresses gratitude for everything Hinds brought into his life:

  Sanders' part serves as a farewell to a bandmate with whom he shared decades of stages, experiences and, presumably, enough heavy-metal volume to permanently rearrange several internal organs.
• "Your Ghost Again" was released as the lead single from Mastodon's ninth album, Marrow Deep. Guitarist Bill Kelliher said the band chose it to introduce the record because "it sounds like Mastodon, and it has all the things in there," while acknowledging the deeply personal subject.
• The track was produced by Patrik Berger, whose credits include Taylor Swift and Robyn, and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou. It was recorded at Mastodon's own West End Sound studio in Atlanta.
• "Your Ghost Again" is the first recorded Mastodon song to include guitarist Nick Johnston, who joined the band following Hinds' departure, alongside touring keyboardist João Nogueira. Both musicians also contributed to the songwriting.
• The song continues Mastodon's long tradition of turning personal tragedy into ambitious music. Crack the Skye and Emperor of Sand are both concept albums deeply rooted in grief (Crack the Skye takes its title from Dailor's sister Skye, who died when he was a teenager). The Hunter and Hushed and Grim also draw heavily on the deaths of siblings, parents and managers.
• Mastodon first performed "Your Ghost Again" live on June 3, 2026, at the O2 Universum in Prague, Czech Republic, as they began their European tour. Sanders dedicated the performance to Hinds after noticing a fan holding a sign that read, "He will forever be in our hearts. Brent Hinds."
• The album title Marrow Deep echoes the depth of Dailor's relationships with both Hinds and his mother. Dailor told The Guardian they were "the deepest you can get with a person. It's hard to think of closer people that we could lose."
