Songfacts®:

  • This song is about sexual abuse that White witnessed within the church. He told Mojo: "That happened in my church at home, to nine boys in my youth group. One of my best friends at the time, he was a youth leader and perpetrator and he went to jail for multiple years for it. That was real to the core of my understanding of church and authority. It was a big deal to everyone that went through that down there. I needed to write a song about it, and so I wrote a song about it."
  • White's parents are Christian missionaries and he does believe in God, though, he says he's not a Christian. "It's important to know that you're a small part of a big thing that this time on Earth doesn't revolve around you," White said. "There is something going on. We don't know what it is, let's all just agree to love each other as best we can and not think about it any more."
