Mike Doughty wrote the majority of this song after he saw a picture of a man kicking the window of a Starbucks location in Seattle, during the 1999 WTO Ministerial Conference protests.
The song's mention of celebrities such as James Van Der Beek and Tia and Tamera Mowry were due to the fact that they were considered "hip" at the time the song was first conceived.

Doughty wrote this song with Dan Wilson. The two first crossed paths when Doughty's band Soul Coughing was on a bill with Wilson's band Semisonic at the HFStival in Washington, DC. They later shared a manager, Jim Grant, who teamed them up.
