Songfacts®:

  • "Alimony" is a sassy, no-nonsense track that tackles the theme of divorce with a strong, independent woman's perspective. It was inspired by Lambert's parents, who frequently worked divorce cases while private investigators in Dallas, Texas.
  • Lambert co-wrote the song with frequent collaborators Natalie Hemby and Shane McAnally. It twists the famous phrase "Remember the Alamo" into "Remember the Alimony."
  • Lambert recounted the song's genesis:

"We were out in my barn; I was showing Shane and Natalie the horses, and I asked if he had any other titles. He said he had one, and I was like, 'What is it? Because your last one was 'Looking Back on Luckenbach,' which I didn't think you could top.' He said, 'Well, 'If you're gonna leave me in San Antone, remember the Alamo-neeeee...''' Natalie and I were like, 'All right, Shane! Stop showing off.'"

The trio then headed back to the house, guitars in hand. Lambert had a clear vision: "I specifically was like, 'I want a shuffle, man.' I love to shuffle so much, and this record needed a shuffle! I knew I wanted one in my set, because I haven't done one in a while – and everybody loves a shuffle."

The three inserted every Texas metaphor they could think of, intentionally infusing humor into a rather grim topic. "I mean, the guy gets out pretty easy if all he does is move back in with his mom," said Lambert.
  • Miranda Lambert co-produced "Alimony" with Jon Randall. A highly respected figure in the country music industry, Randall started as a guitarist for Emmylou Harris' Nash Ramblers, winning a Grammy for their Live at the Ryman album. Along with regularly collaborating with Lambert, he has also produced albums for such artists as Dierks Bentley, Dwight Yoakam, and Pat Green.
  • Natalie Hemby sings the background vocals. The musicians are:

    Conrad Choucroun: drums, percussion
    Bukka Allen: keyboards
    Rachel Loy: bass
    Jedd Hughes: electric guitar
    Ethan Ballinger: electric guitar
