  • Mark Jacob Lenderman is a guitarist and vocalist for the indie band Wednesday, a group known for its blend of alt-country and shoegaze influences. Outside of Wednesday, Lenderman has carved out a successful solo career. His solo work often delves into themes of regret, disillusionment, and flawed humanity. His sound is influenced by alt-country, lo-fi indie rock, and classic Americana artists like Neil Young and Wilco.
  • On many of his recordings, MJ Lenderman plays the majority of the instruments himself, showcasing his versatile musicianship.
  • His great grandfather was saxophonist Charlie Ventura, who played with Gene Krupa and Buddy Rich and was pretty big in the bebop world.
  • Born and raised in the mountain town of Asheville, North Carolina, Lenderman began playing guitar at age 7, taking lessons alongside his best friend, which allowed them to jam and learn together.
  • Lenderman was raised Catholic and served as an altar boy in his youth. There was a spell where he considered becoming a priest – "pre puberty," he told Uncut magazine. His childhood Catholicism has found its way into several of his lyrics, including a line from his 2024 track "Joker Lips":

Every Catholic knows he could have been Pope
  • Lenderman studied at UNC Asheville for three semesters before dropping out to pursue music full time.
  • Before his music career took off, Lenderman worked at an ice cream shop in Asheville.
  • His 2022 album Boat Songs was critically acclaimed and listed as one of the best albums of the year by Paste, Stereogum and The Ringer. It earned him a recording contract with Anti Records.
  • Lenderman was in a relationship with his Wednesday bandmate Karly Hartzman for several years before their split in 2024.
  • He's known for his minimalist approach to touring, often traveling light with just essentials. By keeping his touring gear to a minimum, Lenderman can focus on what's necessary for performances and basic needs.
  • He is a big basketball guy known for his killer three-pointer in middle school and high school. "I hit a couple of game winners," Lenderman told GQ. "The best game I had, I think it was nine or 10 threes in one game. I was good at shooting, but I couldn't play defense. I was too scared out there. I don't have the Mamba Mentality."
  • Despite being born in 1999, MJ Lenderman loved to listen to cassette tapes during his high school years thanks to his old Honda Accord with a built-in tape deck. His collection wasn't just thrifted finds - he inherited some gems from his family, including a Purple Rain cassette that belonged to his mom.
