Songfacts®:

  • "Cowgirls" is a hip-hop inspired duet between Morgan Wallen and his bud Ernest Smith. They sing 'bout them gals who ain't ever gonna settle down, always on the move. These wild fillies might break your heart when they ride off into the sunset, but you'll never regret that they came into your life, even if it was just for a quick ride.
  • Ernest co-wrote "Cowgirls" with Rocky Block, Ashley Gorley, James Maddocks, and Charlie Handsome. "A few months after we wrote it, I sent it to Morgan," Ernest recalled to Billboard. "When I was singing and freestyling it, I thought, 'Morgan's gonna sound sick on this.' Then, I think, with like eight hours left on the clock before they had to turn the album in, I was at the #1 party for Jelly Roll's 'Son Of A Sinner' and Morgan called me to sing a verse on 'Cowgirls.' I was like, 'I thought you'd never ask' - so I had to get my award and then run to the studio to put my vocal on 'Cowgirls.'"
  • Wallen and Ernest are frequent collaborators. They teamed on Ernest's 2021 hit "Flower Shops," and Wallen's One Thing at a Time album features 11 contributions from Ernest, including the title track and hit single "You Proof."
  • Joey Moi and Jacob Durrett produced the easy-going, heavily programmed track.
  • A cowgirl is a female cowboy, typically associated with the American West and the ranching industry. She is skilled in riding horses and performing various ranch duties such as herding cattle, branding, and caring for livestock. Historically, cowgirls were an important part of the frontier culture and played a significant role in the development of the American West.

Today, the term cowgirl is also used more broadly to refer to women who identify with the independent, adventurous spirit often associated with the cowboy lifestyle. Here are some more songs that mention cowgirls in the lyrics:

"Beautiful Disaster" by 311 ("I know a drugstore cowgirl so afraid of getting bored. She's always running from something so many things ignored").

"Bucked Off" by Brad Paisley ("I think about those nights in Marina Del Rey. As this beautiful cowgirl slips away").

"Cowgirls Don't Cry" by Brooks & Dunn ("It's gonna hurt every now and then. If you fall get back on again. Cowgirls don't cry").

"Let There Be Cowgirls" by Chris Cagle ("Let there be cowgirls for every cowboy. Make 'em strong as any man. Something you can't tame, she's a Mustang").

"That Girl Is A Cowboy" by Garth Brooks ("I took her out to show her how to rope and ride. I can't believe that it was me that wound up broke and tied. That girl is a cowboy").

"Dime Store Cowgirl" by Kacey Musgraves ("I'm just a dime store cowgirl. That's all I'm ever gonna be. You can take me out of the country. But you can't take the country out of me").

"Cowgirl In The Sand" by Neil Young ("Hello, cowgirl in the sand. Is this place at your command?").

"Reverse Cowgirl" by T-Pain ("Just put it in reverse cowgirl. Giddy up, giddy up, pump it up girl").
  • "Cowgirls" debuted at #40 on the Hot 100 and remained on the chart for 20 weeks. After it was released to radio, it re-entered the chart at #42 in May 2024.
  • Where the sun don't rise
    Rodeo for one night

Wallen's got that smooth Southern drawl, but for some, this "Cowgirls" lyric got a little muddled. Some folks thought they were hearing "rodeo 419," and wild theories flew about what it meant - CB radio code, a secret message, you name it! Straight from the horse's mouth (or should we say the microphone stand?), "rodeo for one night" is the actual lyric.
